the sun is in his eyes. squinting, ciaran circles around him, relaxed with the knowledge that their 'fight' is little more than a cursory exchange of controlled jabs and the practice of forms half-forgotten from the academy. he is light on his feet, aiming a low sweep at his superior.
"three dead-- all rookies. a fourth has a fifty-fifty chance of recovery." his voice is detached, factual. ciaran has seen too many fresh faces torn to pieces by monsters; he knows better than to get attached too soon, even though there's a twinge of regret in his heart with every body (or parts of a body) he loads into a cart to send home. "the beast is finally dead, however."
( but was it worth it? )
another pause, and then: "you look tired."

he is tired—forever tired, long hours and intermittent crises blanket his bones like the gradual build-up of sediment. fatigue has become a constant, only necessary, bearable.
he moves on autopilot, reflexes dulled by sleepless nights. wilmer blinks against the sun's rays and almost misses the first half of ciaran's report. news of death is banal, tally marks in the sand. but the lines seem to be burgeoning, crowding, sinister. are their new recruits underprepared? or are the monsters stronger now?
he feels cold though the air is sticky warm. "then their deaths weren't in vain," wilmer replies. the line's overpracticed, empty. the next, emptier: "i'll be fine. you shouldn't worry so much, sergeant."

how many times have they gone through this routine of indifference? standing here, with the two of them and their tired eyes, pretending like they're perfectly fine when they're not. ciaran sighs, wonders if this will ever stop-- probably not, until one of them dies and the other carries on with the replacement. it's as simple as replacing a cog in the army's well-oiled machine.
"it's my job to worry about you." he frowns and stops his half-hearted assault. "you need to rest. if not to put my mind at ease, than because if you don't, you're going to make a mistake, lieutenant colonel." and we all know what happens then.
struggling with the urge to hit him over the head and then tuck him into bed while he's out, ciaran settles instead for an unamused stare. "i'll make you soup."

"your job is to look after yourself, ciaran." when the other stops he shifts his weight and rocks back, wiping beading sweat off his forehead with the back of a hand. his breaths come quicker, harder than they should for the exertion level of a practice spar. admittedly, his subordinate isn't entirely wrong. even so—"and to take my orders."
"besides, i haven't made a mistake yet," wilmer adds, a mulish edge creeping into his tone. he returns ciaran's pointed look, lifts his brows in query. "soup?"

"i do." it's a halfhearted defense for halfhearted truth. ciaran sleeps and eats. when he's not making sure certain other people do the same. he even takes the lieutenant colonel's orders-- it's a terrible waste to spend all of his creativity on art, after all. at wilmer's insistence that he hasn't made a mistake he concedes, with an irritated grunt to sweeten it.
"soup." ciaran repeats, more slowly this time. in his eye grows an uncharacteristic gleam, a careful look of cunning that belies his mild disposition. "surely you've had some of them before? i make them for the men all the time-- french onion, tomato, chicken.." he lists them off one after another, ticking off finger after finger. "i do have a spot of trouble getting meat for it now and then, but i think i may make beef stew tonight.." ciaran spares a cautious glance at wilmer, hopeful.

"is this an invitation to dinner?" he asks, mildly. wilmer remembers it's the second one today—the first delivered by messenger imp this morning, some pointless, extravagant magicians' reception at versailles. he gave a noncommittal answer then, but he considers the proposal now and rapidly makes up his mind.
as gratuitously motherly ciaran may be, the soldier has good intentions (he's reminded of usha, though wilmer can't speak for her own), his company a far cry more pleasant than that of his fellow magicians.
"en garde, then. if you win, it's a yes." wilmer smiles. they both know it's as close to a guarantee, a throwaway challenge. ciaran is one of their best fighters. if wilmer had faelhaebun and usha to pick up the slack, then the sergeant relied wholly on his own merits. he strikes first this time, lowering his center of gravity and lunging without waiting for a reply.

"of course it is," ciaran sniffs, indignant. it's always an invitation to dinner. no need to dance around-- the lieutenant colonel can think whatever he likes about that.
at wilmer's challenge he smiles knowingly, the skin around his eyes wrinkling as he laughs. "bring your djinn, yeah?" ciaran says, snapping to attention when the other man darts at him.
his heart pounds with a familiar rush of adrenaline-- how many times has he done this? but it's been a while: bare hands only take one so far fighting with things more akin to nightmares than creatures. ciaran drops to match his opponent, expecting a takedown. when wilmer is within reach he strikes, reaching to lock him into a chokehold with every intention of dropping his weight downwards in a sprawl.
wilmer cook u say that but i'm like over a week late LMAO orz
