Bran was dearly hoping that Henri would drop the entire subject, but when he didn't, he nearly choked on the spaghetti. Despite the fact that he felt flustered and could feel the need to blush linger, he was far too busy having a small coughing fit in an attempt to clear his throat. Why did he have to say that? Didn't he understand it was already hard enough to think of him in a platonic fashion with everything that had already happened? Now it was just eating away at his resolve.
Why couldn't he be stronger than this?
Thankfully though, the handsome man didn't stay on the subject any longer and quickly latched onto the question. In that moment, he thanked whatever deity that was listening for the nearly smooth change in topic. However, this didn't help at all in not becoming more enamored with Henri. He just looked so excited to talk about cats and just seeing that joy made his heart swell up in happiness.
Damn him and his weakness.
"You seem to love cats an awful lot," he hummed, his voice the slightest bit raspy from the coughing fit. "What do you like about the strays? I'm curious to hear more about them since you obviously take the time to care for them. I think they're quite interesting animals. I like observing them from time to time."

Henri could just go on and on about the cats. He wanted to call them his, but legally they were not. Yet he was still happy enough providing them food and occasional shelter. One day, he was determined to raise all the cats he could in a bigger house. For a moment he wondered if that was weird, but if it was, so be it. It was how he wanted to live his life.
Thank goodness Bran stopped him, because he'd have gone onto the individual preferences of all the cats he tended to. Even the ones that rarely showed back up to him.
"I do love cats. I really do. They've quite friendly, after you've given them food. I don't know, I guess I just find them cute. And they're so gentle and kind sometimes, if you make sure you're kind to them back. Now that I think of it, you kind of remind me of them, a little bit. There's one, her name's Oreo, she's black and white. She's a little shy at first, but after you feed her and she gets to know you, she'll let you pet her. She likes tuna the best, but I guess all cats like tuna..."
He trailed off. Henri often wondered what the cats did at night, or when he was at work, even perhaps what they might be doing now. "Do you have any pets, Bran?"

"I remind you of a cat?" Bran asked curiously, eyebrows raised in surprise at that comparison. He supposed he could see why Henri would say such a thing, but he didn't think himself to be very feline-like in any way. After all, he had always felt more attached to birds such as crows and ravens. Those interested him more.
Regardless of all of that, the magician couldn't help but smile as Henri babbled on about cats. He just looked so adorable that way and he could only imagine just how he would act around cats. The image in his head was priceless and he could feel himself coo at the thought. Hopefully one day he could figure out a way that Henri could own a cat.
Oh, but now he was asking if he had any pets. Bran furrowed his brow in thought, not exactly sure how to answer that question. The djinn he had contracts with were nowhere near close to being pets, but shapeshifting Resi was a different story. That particular djinni loved to shift in the form of common house pets so others wouldn't bother him (and just so Bran could pamper him like the spoiled pet he pretended to be). So, technically he couldn't say no, but he couldn't say yes either.
"Well, I personally don't have any pets, but I do look after a few animals that like to... pop up unannounced. Mainly it's a black cat, a dark-haired dog and a crow. They've become so spoiled since I've come to know them. Occasionally, other animals show up, but those are the main three." Okay, so he didn't lie, but he didn't tell the whole truth either. It wasn't his fault that Resi enjoyed shapeshifting whenever he pleased.
"Maybe you'll see one of them when you come over to my place. They love being spoiled after all although they can be troublesome too. They'll probably love you as much as..." he paused, stopping himself before he said something absolutely stupid. He was supposed to be aiming for platonic. "Just as much as I like being around you."
In an attempt to keep himself from saying anything embarrassing, he quickly stuffed his mouth with food. Can't say anything dumb if one's mouth was too busy doing something else.

"Oh, well, yeah. The cute and adorable part, at the very least." But Henri didn't know Bran very well, did he? Perhaps he shouldn't have said it quite like that, but first impressions were powerful. And if anything, poor lost and confused Bran looked like a stray kitten looking for its home.
And boy, did Henri really want to pick him up and help him. And he did, to some extent, even though in the most surprising turn of events Bran was paying for this meal. But at least he got the last word with walking him home to ensure no danger came to him. Small victories. He mentioned Oreo (a cute name, if he'd say so himself) because he thought maybe one day Bran would like to meet her.
Though he wasn't exactly sure how that would work out.
At least he wasn't the only one getting lost in the thought of a pet. Bran seemed to be thinking, and then responded. "Ah, you have pets! They sound wonderful, I'd love to meet them. I have to admit, though, I can go overboard with the snacks and treats." He knew about cats the most, so he'd probably have no trouble with the cat. He wasn't sure about the dog and... a crow?
Definitely odd, but he brushed it aside. To each their own, and if Bran delighted in all sorts of animals, Henri was sure he'd be able to do the same.
He took another bite of the spaghetti. They were, slowly but surely, diminishing the entire plate. He stabbed a meatball and ate it before swallowing and continuing. "I'm sure they're lovely. I'll probably love them just as much. Animals are really the best, don't you think?"
He noticed a singular meatball on his side of the plate. Having just eaten one, he thought he would be nice to give it to Bran. He lightly pushed it with his fork over to his side of the plate. "Here, have this."

Bran internally groaned at the compliments Henri gave him, holding back the need to face-plant right into the table from how much the fluttering in his stomach was pestering him. Why did he have to compliment him so freely? And why did he have to get so worked up in such a way when Henri said nice things to him? And most of all, why did he have to be so weak?
This was all so unfair and he was certain some deity above found pleasure in his suffering.
"Don't worry about going overboard with that. They're spoiled rotten anyways, so having someone else shower them with attention will make them absolutely delighted," he reiterated, staring at their nearly finished plate. "But I suppose animals really are one of the best things around. At least to me anyways. I'm slightly biased though because I'm fond of birds the most. That's not to say I like the others any less; I just like birds a little more."
He stopped his blathering for a moment, flashing Henri a slight smile as he took the meatball. "Ah, thanks," he chirped, cutting it in half and returning half of it to the handsome man. "I only want half though, so here. We'll share it too."
A familiar giggle caught his attention again and Bran instinctively looked to the direction of the woman from earlier. The woman was giving him a weird signal, pointing at him and then Henri before making the shape of a heart with her hands. What in the world was she getting at? It's not as if he could even ask because she and her partner were leaving, but not before the two of them gave him a thumbs-up. Suddenly, he felt really embarrassed and tried counting backwards from a hundred in his head to keep calm. When that didn't work, he tried talking to take his focus off of what just occurred.
"But uh... Yeah, birds. I like birds perhaps just as much as I love books. From what I read in a few books, some of the species mate for life such as a certain type of swan. I rather like the idea of that. Finding a mate for life. It's quite romantic, I think. Being capable of loving one another for the rest of their lives. I think it's a nice idea. Although, things don't always work out that way, right? It's a shame sometimes." Maybe he should just shut his mouth while he was ahead. "Oh, but yes. I like birds as much as I love books. I think the same goes for you now. You're one of my three favorite things."
Bran would have to remind himself later to punch himself in the face for his own stupidity.

Bran was a bird person. Henri was a cat person. He really hoped that his cats were alright with Bran's birds. Goodness, what was wrong with him? He was already thinking about their cats mingling with each other. What was next? The fine minute details of their living arrangements? Henri had to mentally slap himself out of it. No way, not in a million years did he think that was appropriate to think of on the first day they met.
It was like some blind date gone horribly wrong (or horribly right).
"You really didn't have to, but thank you." He took the half meatball and plopped it into his mouth. And then he heard it. The couple was at it again. Henri was mortified at this moment. If the ground could open up and swallow him he would willingly jump in right now. As much as he liked being mistaken for a couple, it was still embarrassing. Actually, he was sure if they were an actual couple it would feel the absolute same. At least some things don't change.
Still he smiled and waved goodbye at them. They were nice, if he thought about it. Trying to give them encouragement as a gay couple, even if they were not an actual gay couple. It didn't hurt to be kind. Afterwards he focused on paying attention to what Bran was talking about.
And then he just stared. Henri had planned on taking another forkful of spaghetti (they were on the last layer of noodle) but he kind of just didn't lift his fork to his mouth as he stared at Bran as he continued to talk.
Was this some kind of code? A special type of swan... Was he a swan? Was that what he meant? And they found soul mates? Did Bran know the implications of what he was saying right now because Henri could hardly contain himself at the moment. What was going on?
And then the final nail on the coffin. Henri was one of his three favorite things. He might just die from the awkward cuteness that Bran exuded. It was too much. He wasn't sure how the two of them could just be friends.
And yet Henri was still going to try. "Yeah, I think that's pretty romantic too. I hope things work out like that for the both of us. You know, finding a life mate to be with for each of us. Maybe it doesn't even have to be romantic either, but I'd like a romantic partner. How about you?" Henri meant it in a way that both of them could hopefully find their respective soul mate. But too late did he realize that it sounded so wrong.

Bran was still mulling over the fact that he was an idiot for talking too much (and saying things he definitely shouldn't be saying if his end goal was to have a platonic relationship with Henri) when the handsome man began to talk. Maybe he would say something that would help ease the discomfort he felt for accidentally talking about silly things. At this point he prayed for something else to take the awkwardness away.
Except, what Henri said only made it just a bit more worse and now he was fidgeting.
"U-Uh... Yeah. I'd... uh, I'd like that," he stuttered, trying very hard to control it from getting any worse than it already was. What did he mean? Was he talking about them... working out and being romantic? Or did he mean something else? Perhaps he meant finding a mate for their own selves and that working out. Yes, that sounded right. That's probably what he meant, right? Because no way did he mean the two of them. Together. For life.
No, he would not allow his hopes to grow.
"Um... Well, I always loved the idea of having a romantic relationship with someone, but... There was never an opportunity for it. Being too quiet and too awkward to talk to people and all. I blame all the fairy tales that spoke of romance and happy endings. I blame them for the reason I want to be with someone, but I'm too odd. I probably couldn't hold down a relationship even if I tried." So he was poking fun at himself, but he knew it was true. Everyone thought him to be socially inept and far too odd. His avoidance and need to have his nose in a book all the time hadn't helped either. So even if he was just kinda laughing at himself, he knew it all to be true. It would be the stuff of fairy tales if he found someone who wanted to be with him romantically.
It wasn't likely to happen.
"What do you look forward to when it comes to romance?" Bran was curious. For once, it was not because he wanted to find a way to perhaps impress or get closer to Henri. He was just genuinely curious about what he would like in a romantic relationship.

It took Henri approximately one minute and twenty three seconds to realize the connotation of what he said. Thirty seconds for his face to turn from slightly red to tomato red. A minute of trying to calm himself down with nothing. Another minute to realize it did nothing to help. He opened his mouth to clarify what he meant, because apparently today he was pretty much off his game. Entirely.
But then Bran spoke. Maybe he didn't find it to be as horrifying as Henri felt it was. But a sneaking suspicion told him that he was wrong and Bran knew exactly what he meant and was only trying to be courteous and stuff. Oh, that would just be the absolute worst.
That would also mean that Bran had just said yes to a romantic partnership between the two of them for life. So it couldn't be that, right? He contemplated this in one part curiosity and two parts shame. If he did, then that meant Bran shared he mutual attraction. But on the flip side, it would mean that Bran was thinking about it in a platonic way and that meant there was absolutely no chance of them getting together. A bummer but absolutely understandable.
Bran then clarified, kind of. He talked about romantic relationships, which were still in the ball park, but from his words Henri could neither confirm nor deny either of his theories. And the way Bran talked made it seem as though he were leagues older than he was. Unless he was super hygienic and attractive even in old age.
"How old are you? You never know if and when the opportunity for love is in front of you. It's just trying to spot it at just the right moment and catch it in just the right way that you know." Henri laughed a little. "Maybe it's right in front of our noses right now. Who knows."
Encouraging words, though if Henri only practiced what he preached. He believed that his body was soiled beyond repair and not worthy of love. He wasn't sure if he'd ever find a fairy tale romance that he longed for.
"Oh, well, I guess I never really thought past the whole romantic partner part. Uh, I guess I look most forward to the cute cuddles and just spending time together, admiring how cute they are..." He sighed. That was the life. "What about you?"

"Oh... Well, I'm twenty-six. But even so, I feel so... not my age because of my lack of 'youthful' interests like going around to bars, parties, and the like. They're hardly ever interesting. Drunk brawling does nothing to interest me either. I think I'm just hard to excite. Things have to be interesting to excite me in any way." He paused, taking a quick moment to smile at Henri. "Just like how I find you interesting."
Afterwards, his mind began to wander to the idea of love. He would very much like to think that love was right in front of th... Wait, did he just say that love could be right in front of their noses? Did he... Did he mean that they could possibly be something more? Like something romantic? Is that what he was getting at? Just the idea that he could be suggesting such a thing was making his heart race and he couldn't stop staring at Henri for that particular moment.
So much for a platonic relationship.
"Yes... Maybe it is in front of our noses. Maybe," he wondered out loud, his blue eyes still on the handsome man. "As for me... Well, I just look forward to the idea that that person will become home. They'll be what brings me comfort and hopefully I'll be able to comfort them too. I also like the idea of just being with that person even if we're simply walking around together. Holding hands and just being able to cuddle. The whole idea of romance and love just... Well, I love it all really." He blushed a little then, scratching his cheek in slight embarrassment as he let out a quiet nervous chuckle. "I've always been a bit of a romantic. I guess... I never realized how much until you ask me. It's sorta funny coming from someone who has a hard time talking to mostly everyone."

Henri knew the errors of his ways. Henri also could not bring himself to care about the errors of his ways. What he said was true, and he left it but to Bran to try to interpret what he said. He knew, deep down somewhere, that both of them were dancing around the subject. He had allowed himself to believe that he could lead a life of having only platonic partners.
Oh how wrong he was. This was beyond anything and yet he was trying. Failing, of course (any sane person would do the same in this situation), but nonetheless he was going through the motions at the very least.
"You aren't that old. What are you trying to say about me? I'm a year older than you. I don't particularly like bars or parties. You're insinuating that I'm some sort of old man, aren't you?" He teased Bran. He couldn't help it, liking to see the guy in front of him squirm.
Henri couldn't help but draw inferences from what Bran was saying. Although Henri was less than subtle, he needed to make sure that Bran was feeling the same (not that he really doubted it, but he wanted to make doubly sure). "That sounds like a storybook ending. It would be nice if life was like that's, wouldn't it."
Perhaps it could work, if Bran didn't mind his whole occupation and all.
"Oh, you're killing me, Bran..." He muttered under his breath.

Bran quickly blushed at the playful jab, trying to come up with a way to clarify that he really was just talking about himself personally. He in no way was he talking about Henri. But he was certain he knew that and just decided to poke fun at him.
Huh, he liked this playful side.
"I-I wasn't talking about you, silly," the magician pouted, holding back the desire to both fidget and stick his tongue out at Henri in retaliation. Why did he have to tease him so much? As he had said before, he was only human and he could only handle so much temptation. "You're not an old man at all. We just... have interests that aren't necessarily common for most people around our age, is all. Besides, you're much too playful to be an old man. Too youthful too. Same goes for being too attractive to people."
He was getting in way too deep and Bran knew it, but he didn't want to stop himself. Couldn't stop himself. He wanted to know as much as he could about the handsome man and spend as much time with him as possible. And while he had initially planned for them to simply be friends, he couldn't really deny the attraction he felt for Henri as well as the romantic feelings that were slowly arising.
Perhaps he was just tired of being lonely? No, that wasn't it and he knew it.
"How... am I killing you?" Bran asked in confusion, cocking his head to the side to further prove his befuddlement. Had he done something? "You asked me about what I looked forward to when it comes to romance and I just gave an honest answer. It's not as if I said something bad, right? Although, I could actually go on and on about romance and love. Uh, but... I wouldn't want to bore you with anything like that anyways. They're merely ideas after all. Real relationships are more likely not going to be that way, but then again, I've never really had one, so who's to say?"
Maybe he should just shut up now. Yes, good idea. Surely he was only talking this much because of lack of sleep. Yes, that was it. That was his excuse and he was going to run with it.
"Uh, maybe we should get going. Unless you're still hungry or if you want dessert. You could order something else. Actually, something sweet sounds great right now," Bran proposed, the corner of his mouth twitching a bit in his nervousness. "So yeah, would you like to order something else or get going? Either one would be fine with me. It means we get to spend more time together."

"Don't say it like you aren't playful, youthful, and attractive. You honestly give me too much credit. Give yourself some too. After all, it takes two to hold a conversation."
Henri needed to stop. He needed to stop right now for the sake of his sanity. But he found it so hard to stop. It just flowed so easily, the compliments, the subtle flirting, and then the not so subtle flirting. It was mutual, right? Yet in the face of all this evidence he could not keep himself from second guessing.
Even if Bran did want to pursue him romantically, even if Henri returned these feelings, he could not be faithful. He could not simply quit his only paying job, and it would kill him inside to start a relationship and still do the things he did. He could not bear to be unfaithful, could not bear to hurt Bran like that.
"No, no, I didn't mean anything of it. It's just you again, being you. Which I enjoy immensely. It's adorable - I feel like I'm overusing that word though. But I can't think of another word to describe everything you are, if I could even do that. I... I enjoy being with you too. I enjoy everything you say and enjoy everything about you. I want to hear all about your relationship goals... I want you to tell me everything you want to."
Oh no, that was too much. It was much too much. "Agh, curse me and my mouth. Ignore that, please. It was creepy."
He wanted more than anything to prove that a relationship with him could be like that. Henri didn't know why he wanted to say that - because a relationship with him would be anything but. He kept his mouth shut, moving on.
"Whatever you wish, but I can go for some sweets. What do you want?"

Bran had to cover his face with his hands and take a few deep breaths to calm down, because holy hell, his heart was going a mile a minute. Why in the world did Henri have to be so... damn tempting? This is what temptation felt like right? Because it was more than a little hard to resist and he was having a hard time thinking straight.
Were potential romantic relationships always like this?
"N-No... It wasn't creepy," he murmured through his hands, taking a few more deep breaths. Only when he felt his heartbeat begin to slow down to a normal pace did he remove his hands from his face. He was fairly certain that he was red in the face again. "It was... well, it felt really nice to hear. I do feel very much the same way. Uh, I mean about enjoying all that stuff about you too. Because it's just... Like I said, you're one of my favorite things."
He said the last bit really rushed, hoping that Henri wouldn't register it at all. Instead of focusing on that though, he looked for the waiter that had attended to them earlier and called him over. He had no idea what was served for dessert here but he didn't feel like having Henri order for them again. He wasn't a total invalid (or at least that's what he told him). After asking the waiter for a dessert menu of some kind, the waiter promptly took the now nearly empty plate of spaghetti with him and returned with a couple smaller menus listing an assortment of desserts.
Unsurprisingly, Bran decided to look for something with chocolate. Surely chocolate would help keep him calm.
"Hmm... the tiramisu looks good, but so does the chocolate gelato and the chocolate tartufo. Oh, or maybe even the chocolate love cake," he wondered out loud, pondering over which was tempting enough to get. They all had some form of chocolate in it and he would be happy to eat all of them. "I just want something sweet and chocolately. Henri, pick for me. Surely you won't fail me. You know this place better after all. Oh, and again, order whatever you want. We can even share again if you want."

"'Tell me everything' sounds like something that comes out of the mouth of some stalker, or obsessive person. I'd rather not paint myself to be like that." Still, Henri laughed. Bran was amusing, entertaining, really he was. And his fast talking did not go unnoticed by Henri. "I like being someone's favorite, people don't usually willingly admit that. That's what I like about you, I think. You're blunt but in a good way."
Henri wasn't sure what Bran liked, although he seemed to know what he was doing concerning dessert. Bran did like sweets, didn't he? He said so right before they came to the restaurant, on the train. Dessert was usually a luxury that Henri couldn't afford, but since Bran was paying for the meal...
It made him feel dirty thinking about it like that. Like he was using Bran. He really, truly did have to pay him back for this one day. He wasn't exactly sure how or when, though. He listened to Bran name all the desserts. He had no idea what half of them were, even. But it seemed like he was in the midst of an expert. "I... honestly, I don't know what half of these mean or how to pronounce them. It's like an entirely different language, and I know how to speak two of them. I guess... I guess the chocolate love cake sounds good?"
Honestly out of all the desserts there, it was the only one that Henri remembered Bran saying. Mostly because of the 'love cake' part. He wondered if it was weird to pick that one of all of them, but he'd already said it.

Having Henri pick out a dessert should not result in him wanting to melt in his chair. The love cake. Out of all the things to pick, he picked the love cake and it was making Bran internally gush. Granted, it was probably because he didn't know what the other ones were (which means he would have to show Henri at a later time what they all were), but regardless, the choice made his head spin just a little bit too much.
Where had all his self-restraint go?
"Well, I know a good portion of the menu because of books I've read and I've gotten a number of them during times where my sweet tooth won't leave me alone," he explained, trying to soothe Henri. He had no intent on making him feel like he didn't know enough, but perhaps he'd have to find another way better comfort him now. "Chocolate love cake happens to be one of the desserts I like most. It's basically a combination of cheesecake, chocolate cake, and chocolate mousse. Just in individual layers of course. Uh, it's a lot more delicious than I'm describing though. We can share a slice of love cake if you want to try it. I don't mind sharing with you. And... then you can order a dessert you like."
Bran started biting down on his lip, trying to figure out a way to apologize for possibly making Henri feel bad. That was the last thing he wanted to do. If only he wasn't such a bookworm and knew when to shut his mouth. "Sorry again... Eh, for possibly making you feel bad. It wasn't my intention at all, but have a bad habit of talking before actually thinking about things. My bluntness tends to get me into more trouble than anything. But I'm glad to know at least one person likes it."
Quite honestly, the magician wondered how he hadn't chased Henri away already. Most people would've left him ages ago. Surely before getting on the metro with him. But then again, the handsome man was a special one.
Yup, he was definitely going to surprise him later on the walk home.
