her fingernails are caked with dirt and splintered with mud. hills of unearthed worms struggle under dim illuminations of barely functioning lampposts. yin carries on digging. her skin catches freckles of light; dull and dead. she carries on digging. crows yell incomprehensible things, as do faraway children.
by now, the hole is meters deep and could hardly be considered neat, but yin's nail scrapes across bone, nearly snapping it in two. she stops digging. carefully she lifts the collarbone from the ground and supports it with two hands. she gasps. not a chip, not a mark.

Chevalier likes to venture the cemeteries. It reminds him of his human life. That once upon a time he was like them. He isn't immortal and all he can do is wait for the time he will be human again. If not in life, but in death.
His thoughts are interrupted by the pile. A horrified look upon his face, he runs over to the hole.
"What are you doing?!" He shouts down into it, his eyes catching the light of the moon, glowing. Angry. "Don't defile the graves! They deserve their rest..."

the collarbone shatters in the very same fingers that so lightly tried to preserve them. crushed bone sprinkles down onto her abdomen; yin's focus is already up to the very loud voice from up above. she's sad, she thinks, she's angry, she considers, but once she recognises the outline of the very face she'd once sworn to, all feelings of upset crumble, for she grabs at the dirt that marks a wall of her hole and that, crumbles.
"rest?" she shouts to him, mirroring his tone. she's confused; startled, but familiarity continues sapping at raw frustration.

"They're put there to rest," he states as he hangs his arm down into the hole, asking for her hand. He wants to pull her out of it. "Their life was long, and this grave is their permanent resting place."
Forever, they'll sleep, never to wake again. To disturb their resting grounds seems so... horrific, but he knows of the girl. He has seen her before. It doesn't change his feelings and she still shouldn't get away with it. If anything, the fact that he recognizes her makes him all the angrier.
"Please, come out of there. I beg of you."

she yanks at his arm instead, and pulls herself up without much trouble. the grass lightly tickle her toes, and she sniffs at him when face to face. her eyes don't meet his, for her mind is lost in watery opportunity; perhaps it was never something for her to hold. but looking down at her great hole, it doesn't take contemplation to know this won't be the final time she'll rendezvous at the park of graves.

He offers her an arm after she's been pulled out of the deep grave. "Walk with me."
Her sniffs mean nothing to him as they walk through the dark graveyard, the wind blowing through the trees, through his hair, her hair. Her scent wafts by, subtle mixed with the smell of death and wet soil. "Why are you here, anyway?"

yin only knows she doesn't want to talk about it because she has to pry her lips open. this one is blessed by the king, she has to remind herself. the king, the king, the king, the king. her pace is slow; she makes sure to follow at a small distance.
she takes a deep breath. she'd been trying to mimic human behaviour lately, but every action is too exaggerated, too forceful.

finally still, she stares at the taller man in confusion. she mimics blinking; it's become somewhat of a comfort. his smile brings none. human expressions far too often fly over her head.
"but the dead can't wake no more." she blinks. "the dead are dead. unless i help." she beams with pride.

He's hoping to distract her, lure her away from the graveyard and away from her thoughts of reanimation. How terrifying that would be...
