he's been standing on viven's doorstep for the past minute, turning the brass key over and over between his fingertips like a gear. the metal's warm and damp, the fresh baguettes in the grocery bag tucked under his shoulder cooling. the low rumble of a passing car stirs him out of his stupor; ezra finally slots the key into the lock. it isn't cowardice that kept him stalling, he tells himself, and pushes the door open with a shoulder.
"dead or alive, i'm coming in," he calls out, ostensibly for vivien who must have woken up by mid-morning. then ezra grimaces at his own joke—better in his head.

viv wakes at the sound of the door, groggy and bleary eyed, with some percussion instrument thumping at the back of his head. he grumbles at the sight of yesterday's clothes on him, fumbles out of bed clumsily to stand looking on the verge of collapse. somewhat conscious of the state he's in, viv runs a hand through his bed head in a poor attempt to fix it, and takes slow steps towards ezra.
his fingers latch onto a baguette like a spider. he tears it in two, nibbles at the soft centre.

something catches around his trachea when he spots vivien shuffle out, zombiefied. it's only for a faltering heartbeat that he averts his gaze to the living room wallpaper. his greeting's barely belated. "you look like shit," ezra says bluntly, scowls when the blond pilfers a baguette and starts grazing.
shepherding him into the kitchen, ezra dumps his purchases on the counter and runs a glass until the tap. he holds it out. "drink."

viv takes a seat; sheepishly follows orders with a lazy glance, gulps the water handed to him down easily. the glass collapses onto the counter softly. he strains a yawn, resting his head on his arms, bracing his head and groaning softly.
"where were you?" he mumbles it like it was more of an existential question than a genuine line of enquiry.

"out," he shrugs and doesn't specify. ezra doesn't even remember most of his wandering, aimless trek, didn't bother reading the street signs. he's back now.
in turn, his mouth opens, eyes scrunching shut as he lets out a responding yawn—it's contagious, after all, and he hasn't slept in over a day now. he rubs at his eyes and runs his tongue over the back of his incisors.
the same glass is refilled; ezra gulps it down to wet his throat. "you feel any better?"

he's a shitty liar—he knows that, so ezra doesn't outright fabricate so much as skirt around the whole truth, as if it were a pothole in the street. fingers twitchy, he turns his back to vivien and unpacks the groceries: the second baguette, a carton of milk, pancake mix, a handful of cigarette packs.
"you were pretty out of it. sucked at taking your own shoes off," ezra snickers, "then i tried to lug you to bed and tripped over a fucking book. i broke your fall. thanks a lot, viv."
he pauses uncomfortably, feeling water slosh around in the pit of an empty stomach. "the end."

in his barely conscious state, viv neglects to pick up the accents of hesitation laid in front of him. instead, like the glass of water, he takes in what he's told without a quiver of doubt. "i see." is all he adds. the nondescript acceptance of ezra's story carries a slight touch of disappointment; at least, it's prominent in his mind. the torn baguette is still in his hand, so he nibbles at it more, taking bigger bites.
"you're not sleepy?" he adds finally, decorated with another a yawn of his own. he eyes him curiously.

his shoulders fall, in relief, fatigue, or something else is insignificant. he picks up the pancake mix and taps the box against the counter a few times to shake out the clumps.
"i guess," ezra replies, blasé. "pancakes?"

"yeah. sure." he adds, nodding his head slightly. his head goes back to rest on the kitchen counter, and before long he's asleep; the cool work surface oddly soothing.

breakfasted, showered, he tracks water carelessly from the bathroom down the hall and into the bedroom, flops stomach down on the bed and sinks into the mattress. the sound of shuffling feet by the doorframe signals vivien's presence, and without raising his head ezra addresses him with his face buried in a pillow.
"i'm sleeping here. bed's better and my back still hurts..." his voice is muffled, slurred with lethargy.

his body seems content with food now in his stomach and enough water not to feel perceptually thirsty. still, his drowsiness comes at a depth he initially couldn't fully comprehend; so when he walks into his bedroom his fingers are already at yesterday's shirt, peeling it off.
he peers at ezra absentmindedly. on any normal day he'd end up forcing him to get off, but viv is too tired to care too much. he does attempt to dry his hair more with a spare towel, lax fingers caressing the nape of his neck. when he gets into bed beside him, he covers ezra with another blanket.

he welcomes the hands in his hair with a content hum. the feeling soothes him a little closer to sleep, despite the pooling bathwater soaking the sheets beneath him. "thanks," ezra mumbles, and when the bed dips he cranes his neck to the side to see vivien join him. it used to stupefy him how the blond had probably slept most of his life away, but now he just blinks slowly in a steady stare.
reason short-circuits. ezra blurts out, "you really don't remember last night?"

instantly he regrets asking—it's idiotic, like running back into a burning house, just-escaped. (but then, what is he but self-destructive?)
he leaps to salvage the situation, too hurriedly, fingers clenching the sheets, speaks too quickly. "no—uh, i mean it wasn't..." the words rush out like a tap twisted open; ezra shuts himself up again, physically snags his bottom lip between his teeth. "forget it. just wondering."
he buries his face again.
