Henri hated work.
For reasons in which were obvious. That's how he found himself in pigalle - again. There was money to be found there if you knew where to look, and unfortunately, Henri knew were to look. And he hated himself ever since, but it was what happened. Of course, he wasn't the pick up off the street kind of prostitute - he was more or less employed to an escort company. He preferred the term escort, even if it was just a glorified way of saving sex worker.
Despite it all, tonight he hadn't been able to net a customer - odd for him, but welcome all the same. He took a break from it, stepping out for the excuse of fresh air. A few more hours and then he didn't have to actively throw himself at people, and he'd be free to go home. He smelled of cheap perfume and sex, a common occurrence. Still, he had to be thankful for the fact that he worked only on certain days, only for certain hours, and only had one customer per night - he knew some of the girls here weren't as lucky.
Sometimes he wished he could help them, the ones who needed money so bad to resort to this, but he was in the same boat. But it always netted good information, so sometimes he just gritted his teeth and went with it.

It should be illegal to have to suffer through such a boring day. Work had been on the mindnumbing side today and Brandon absolutely needed some time to decompress. Surely books would help provide some comfort like they always did.
Except they didn't and he was left feeling restless, which brought him here to his current location. Perhaps the change in scenery would help to soothe him.
His blue eyes took in everything, trying to memorize every detail as he wandered throughout the foreign area. There was an odd amount of women he noticed, piquing slight interest in him. On top of that, a few of them were giving him looks that he couldn't quite describe. They almost looked... intrigued? No, that wasn't it. It was like they were trying to beckon him towards them, but that didn't seem quite right either. Maybe it wasn't the greatest to just go wandering off in some unknown place. He knew he was in the outer ring, but he wouldn't be able to tell where he was if someone asked him.
'Why did I want to go wandering again?' he questioned mentally, stopping in his tracks and looking around restlessly. There were bars from what he could tell, but everything else was a mystery to him. He probably looked like an idiot standing in the middle of gods-knew-where like a deer in headlights. Perhaps some kind soul would have mercy on him and at least tell him where he was (and perhaps point him in the right direction of getting the hell out of here before he embarrassed himself somehow with his awkwardness).

Henri just about finished with his stepping out and resigned to his duty when something caught his eye. Someone so out of place that it was almost laughable - well, Henri almost let out a chuckle. Someone honestly a bit cute, a bit clueless. Sort of had that deer-in-headlights kind of look. Henri decided to watch in amusement for a little while as common prostitutes tried to net him (because honestly, he looked like an easy target), until he came upon the poor boy to save him.
"You look a little lost. Are you alright?" Henri was beside him in an instant, it was almost scary. "Walk with me, lest you want the girls to start throwing themselves at you." He started to walk - although he really shouldn't leave his post, he felt compelled to help the guy. Perhaps escort him out of Pigalle, because he honestly looked different from all the other men looking for a good lay. Still, he didn't want to just assume these things.
"What brings you to this part of town? It's not exactly the most reputable, you know." Perhaps if he was lucky, he could possibly net the guy as a customer and not actually have to sleep with him. He wasn't sure how he was going to slip this by Nova, because he should be working right now, but he was confident that he'd figure something out, possibly. Though, to be honest, he'd probably have to pay out of his own pocket the interest that Nova collected. Or maybe he could sweet talk her.
Oh well, he couldn't bear to let some innocent young man get trapped here, or even worse, get coerced by someone if he didn't want it. Though, he could be wrong, he could just be misreading the entire thing and the guy was just nervous about visiting the place. Either way, he had whisked him away.

One would think that all the training he was put through would help him gain nerves of steel, but no. He jumped a little too much for his liking at the sudden voice, whipping around to stare at the source of the voice. The first thing he noticed about the man was that he was attractive. Ridiculously so. It sort of reminded him of the gorgeous knights-in-shining-armor and princes he often read so much about in his books. His mind even went momentarily blank as he just stared at the man dumbly, quite taken aback by coming across such a handsome person and missing most of what he was saying. Surely if he stared at him anymore, he'd probably start blushing from how striking the man was.
How interesting.
Shaking off the awe, Brandon quickly walked after him. Matching with the other man's stride as best he could, he took a look around at the buildings around them. "I... Well, I was just out for a stroll and I... got lost," he muttered quietly while he continued to look at their surroundings, embarrassed by the fact that he was lost at all. He had a pretty good sense of direction, so the fact that he was wandering around like an lost pup was a hit to his pride. He could even feel his face heat up just a tad from the humiliation. "What exactly is this part of town? I've never seen this place before."
Momentarily, the magician wondered if this other man would think him an idiot for not knowing where he was. What did he exactly mean it wasn't the most reputable? It didn't look so bad from what he had seen. It was just oddly filled with a lot of women that seemed to linger in the streets. Oh, now that he was thinking about it... Taking a look at the women, they were no longer paying him any mind like they were earlier. They seemed wholly uninterested now and that struck him as odd. Was it because of the man he was walking with?
Even more interesting.
"My name is Brandon by the way. Personally, I prefer Bran, but people usually just call me Brandon," he offered as calmly as he could, trying his best to make small talk with the attractive stranger. Maybe if he talked to him, he'd feel less awkward. "Uh... So what's your name?"
Ha, talking making him feel less awkward. How silly.

It was kind of cute, the way that the guy seemed to mumble and blush. It was almost as if he were nervous, a bit embarrassed. Well, Henri would be a little surprised if he wasn't. But oddly enough, it was adorable almost - Henri couldn't help but compare him to a stray cat, all lost and looking for help. Of course, he was happy to help the guy. Anything to help someone in need. It was a little funny, how he just happened to stumble upon this place. He was a funny man, this one.
Henri couldn't help but laugh, a little. He tried to be as good natured as possible - he meant well. "Well, isn't it a bit late for a stroll? It is getting a bit dark, isn't it. Well, we'd best get you home, then. I'll escort you back." He was lost, after all, he didn't even know where he was. Pigalle was kind of distinct in that there were so many unsavory characters climbing about. He'd hate to have seen this guy be taken in by the wrong person. Good thing he stepped in when he did.
"This is Pigalle. The red light district. It's probably better that you don't come here again - not a place for someone like you, I assume." Normally, wouldn't be the place for Henri, either. He glanced around to see if anyone was following them, or taking note of the poor boy. It seemed that his appearance had saved him, as no one was paying the two of them any mind. They were probably assuming that he had taken the boy for himself, which was all sorts of wrong, but he let them think what they thought.
"It's Henri. It's really nice to meet you, Bran. Where do you live - oh, maybe that's a bit too forward there. Forgive me, perhaps we can get something to eat, or maybe go somewhere before? I don't want to intrude in your privacy, so I'll escort you to the closest place you know and let you go on from there. Unless, of course, you don't mind inviting me in?"

Although Bran was absolutely certain that the man wasn't actually laugh at him, he couldn't help the slight pout that settled on his lips. So what if he liked walking around at night? Nighttime was usually the time he had free because work dominated his mornings, so how could anyone blame him? Still though, the guy didn't seem to be trying to make fun of him. He seemed good-natured enough.
Certainly the man's attractiveness wasn't clouding his judgement, no, not at all.
"The red light district?" he repeated, trying to question where he had heard that term before. Sure, he had read about red light districts in a few books, but they had never gone into details to describe what exactly it was. But... he had heard it somewhere else before, but he couldn't remember where and all it was doing is making him pout even more. He should have a better memory than this. He knew he had heard it somewhere else, but where? Thankfully, the man had decided to steal his attention away by speaking. His name was Henri.
Bran decided he liked that name very much.
"Why would asking where I live be too forward? It's not as if I would expect you to accompany all the way there. It's quite a ways away from here, I think," the magician rambled, looking at Henri curiously. "Oh, but it's nice to meet you, Henri. And since I hardly have any idea where we are, it would probably be best to let you pick a place. Uh, to eat. That is, if you want to. I'd be happy to pay for your meal since you're helping me. Thank you for that, by the way. I'd probably be lost without having a knight-in-shining-armor around."
His brain flatlined for a moment, mentally berating himself for saying something so utterly stupid in front of a person who he hardly knew. Why was he so awkward around other people? This is why he stuck to books most of the time. He could never be awkward around books.
Perhaps this is why his mentor thought he was an ill-mannered idiot when he was younger.
"U-Uh, I mean... I'd be lost if you hadn't sav- I mean, found me. Yes, I would've been lost if you hadn't found me. It's always nice to meet nice people willing to help others, right? There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, right? Right."
Perhaps he could conjure up a djinni to have the earth swallow him up. That would be less painful.

Henri felt like some ethereal being up above in the heavens had played a trick on him. This guy - he didn't look much younger than he was, if at all. And yet he could scarcely believe his ears when Bran spit the words back at him, confused and taken aback, as though he had no idea that those four words meant. The red light district, that was what people called it, right? Had he misspoken?
No, that was right, yes? That was definitely what is was, and Henri found Bran's lack of knowledge interesting and quite endearing. He wasn't going to clear it up for him - let the guy have his innocence for a little bit longer.
"Oh, uh, don't mind me. I'm just in the business of respecting people's privacy. If it doesn't matter to you, then I guess I can come home with you, if you'd allow. It might be a bit of a walk, but you managed to get here all on your own, and what kind of person would I be if I didn't escort you back and make sure you're home safe?" There he was again, going on, blabbing to his hearts content.
"I know this place pretty well, and if you've been walking this whole time you must be famished. And it's really nice of you to pay, but I really shouldn't take your money." Though he really should, as this was his time, and it was valuable. Probably shouldn't trouble Bran with that, though.
About Bran though - he really was cute. Henri couldn't help but think that, as he talked and talked - he mumbled and bumbled and it really was one of the most adorable things he had ever seen. It was too bad, though, that they would have to part soon. He really was like a stray cat. "Of course, I'm happy to help those in need. I don't mind helping you at all - if you ever need any help from me again, I'll be there for you."
Henri had no intention of letting Bran go without some way of contacting him. Goodness if he ever got lost in the red light district again.

There were no words that could possibly describe how adorable Bran found Henri to be. It was unfathomable to him how someone could be attractive and endearing at once just because they were talking to him. Just talking. Goodness, he could probably listen to him talk all day.
How strange; talking usually annoyed him.
"Well, I just don't want to inconvenience you later on. I don't think it would be right of me to let you walk all the way back here by yourself if I did let you come with me," he pondered, thinking more out loud than anything else right now. Why did it sound like coming home with him meant something else? "And I'll have you know I'm not totally useless. I normally don't get lost, but today... Oh, nevermind. Maybe fate is just being silly or something."
Just then, his stomach growled rather loudly and Bran was sure his face was a deep shade of red because of it. Why was he so embarrassing? He couldn't even bear to look at Henri now. Honestly, he wouldn't blame him if he thought he was a loser right at this moment. He felt like one.
"Uh, sorry about that. I suppose I really am hungry," he sheepishly admitted, still refusing to look at the handsome man and staring intently at the ground before them. "And... Thank you for the help. I really do appreciate it. So please, allow me to pay for you. It's the very least I could do for the kindness you've shown me."
'And the fact that you had to deal with my awkwardness,' he mentally added.

Henri wasn't sure why Bran was such a blushing mess before him, but at least it was cute, right? He supposed he was lucky, in that way, to come across such a cute guy. But this was more or less the same with anyone he encountered, so why did it feel kind of different with Bran? Was it because he was so innocent and sheltered beyond belief? Probably - he wondered in what kind of conditions the poor guy grew up in if he had no idea about this sort of stuff.
He decided he liked Bran, a lot.
"Trust me, I'll be fine. I'm used to walking, anyways - you don't see many cars around here, do you? And you don't know the area around here that much, so I'm happy to help. Really. Don't worry about it. I'll be fine. I want you to be safe." Even though Bran was trying to justify himself in front of Henri, he found it all the more amusing. He found Bran to be amusing just in general, for the few minutes they had been walking together. They were almost outside the district, and Henri was guiding the two of them toward the nearest station. They'd probably have to wait a bit, but thank god for twenty four hour transportation.
"I think a good place to eat is a few stops from here, thought we might have to wait for the right train. Hopefully your stomach can last until then?" Henri was kind of hungry too, now that he thought about it. Probably not as much as someone beside him who had been walking all day, but still decently so. He examined the map as soon as they approached the station, although he really didn't need to. Twenty years of riding the metro - he gets used to these things.

"It's not so much about walking the distance. I know you're trying to help me and I truly appreciate it, but I couldn't possibly allow you to walk all the way back here by yourself," Bran explained evenly as possible, stealing a glance at Henri's direction. He felt slightly embarrassed and oddly jittery hearing that he wanted him to be safe. Why in the world was he feeling this way? Surely it was nothing; it was would go away in time. Still, the magician couldn't deny the warmth that filled him. Maybe it was just embarrassment.
Regardless, it was interesting.
He had hardly noticed how far they had actually traveled during the small amount of time they had actually been together that it honestly surprised him. How did the phrase go? 'Time flies when you're having fun?' It was definitely the first time such a thing occurred with another person, but he decided he liked spending time with others. Or maybe he was just too enamored with the handsome man that is Henri? Heh, that sounded silly even to him, but he couldn't deny that he was too attracted to him.
"I can hold up fine until then. I'm sure your taste in food is wonderful and I feel like I can trust you." Bran wasn't exactly sure what to say, so he settled for looking around the station for anything interesting to keep his attention. Quite honestly, Henri was the most interesting of all (although he would never say that aloud), so he settled his gaze on the ground and simply stared. Then an idea struck him.
"So what were you doing here, Henri? You seem knowledgeable enough about this area, so do you live around here or something?" For some reason, the idea was slightly unsettling to him. Henri had claimed that the area wasn't the most reputable, so what would someone like him being doing here in the first place?

"Don't worry about it. I'll be fine." No matter how hard Henri tried to reassure him, Bran was just not having it. Ah well, it was probably better to not think about it, anyways. Being invited into another person's house, surely Bran knew what that meant and was trying to let him down easy, right? He'd probably just walk him to his door, if anything. Not go in. Still, he liked that Bran was caring for his well being. But he had the overwhelming urge to protect Bran, and he felt a bit odd thinking of it the other way around.
Probably the guy's innocence, making Henri feel this way. It must be protected, no matter the cost, and Henri was reacting really strongly to it. "There's always the train too. I know the shortest way to get home. Who knows, I might live near you." He wasn't sure if that would be the case - Henri would like it to be the case, but it was highly unlikely. Just so that he could, you know, check on how the innocent little doe was doing. Make sure he was safe, that he didn't hurt himself wandering in places he shouldn't be.
"Oh, me? I..." Henri was caught between honesty and protecting Bran's innocent young ears. How did he put his job innocently? If that was even possible. And just admitting that this was his job was hard enough. But Bran probably didn't even know what the term escort meant if he didn't know where he was. What was the best way to approach the subject, anyways?
"Yeah, I guess you can say I live around here." A lie. "I guess you could say I'm there often for work, too. I'd rather not be there, but you know how it goes down here." He laughed it off, tried to play it off as something simple and definitely nothing bad. Definitely not bad at all, right? Hopefully Bran didn't look up what the red light district was. Maybe he could play it off that he was like a bouncer, or maybe a bartender (but he didn't know how to mix drinks). Or something else, like... something else, definitely.
"Anyways, enough talk about me. The metro schedule says our train's due to be here, and I'd much rather get to know a bit about yourself before we part - if you'd like to share that information, that is."

Okay, so maybe he was being a little bit on the stubborn side about not letting Henri travel all the way to his home (because honestly, he had no idea how out of the way he was going just to accompany him back home), but it was the principle of the matter. Bran always stuck with what he thought was right, and having his acquaintance take him home and come back sounded... Well, just absolutely wrong to him. But he would just let it go for now and let things play out in whatever way they were supposed to. It was all in fate's hands now.
He had been too much in his head that he almost missed when Henri had something contradicting. "Didn't you... just say that you might live near me?" His gaze was on him now, looking at him curiously. "But then... You also said you live around here. Hmm... Are you lying?" He stared at him questioningly, wondering why Henri would even have a need to lie. Was there something he couldn't tell him? It's not as if it mattered if he did live around in this area or not, but why he lie about it?
"You don't need to lie to me, you know. I've no room to judge anyone," he muttered, staring at the ground before them yet again. "My best friends are the books I read. I normally don't interact with people if I don't need to, so I'm seen as highly strange among my coworkers. So... yeah, no room to judge. But I guess I understand why someone would lie; we are still strangers after all."
'But I hope we don't stay that way,' he thought afterwards, biting his lip and furrowing his brow as if to prevent the words from spilling out unintentionally.
"Uh, how about we take turns asking each other a question? It's something I read in a book once, and it seemed to work just fine. You want to know about me and I'm curious to get to know you too. Does... that sound fair?"

Ah, oh god, Henri felt bad now. Incredibly so. Guilt gripped his heart like blackened vines, caught in a lie. Still, he tried to appear as though to shrug it off, even though he felt immensely sorry about it. "Sorry, you caught me there." He laughed, although it was a bit forced. He acknowledged that he probably shouldn't have done it, but he had been in panic mode when Bran had asked him the question. It sort of just came out. "I don't actually live around there, though the reason still stands that it's for work purposes. Sorry about that, I guess it was just an unexpected question."
He really didn't want to tell Bran, either way. But it felt even worse to lie to him. He had tried to quickly patch it up, if only for a little while. He'd been wishing that maybe Bran hadn't caught him, but he was perceptive, at the very least. It was as though he had sinned against the purest of things, and that was devastating. There was no going back now, but if he had the chance Henri would've taken it. Nothing was worth the hurt he probably caused the poor guy.
"Ah, no, it's not like that at all! I didn't lie because we were strangers, it's just something I don't really talk about that much, not at all, actually. People kind of just assume why I'm there and accept it." Though he could see why it would be a bit difficult for Bran to draw that conclusion. "And I think that's kind of charming in and of itself. I wish I had the time to read like that. You're like a bookworm, and people like that have always impressed me."
He wasn't sure how to continue the conversation before Bran interjected his thoughts. But that was all good, welcome even.
"That's a great idea. I think that's incredibly fair - though you should ask the question first, for this time around, since you've already said you piece. For the moment, at least."

He almost looked flustered and Bran couldn't help but give the tiniest of smiles. So he was here because of work, eh? Briefly, he wondered what Henri could possibly be working as in this area. Perhaps he worked at a bar? No, that didn't seem right. But then, what? He obviously didn't want to talk about his work, so maybe he was embarrassed? Or perhaps he was just like him and was terribly bored with work so the idea of speaking of it was soul-crushing at best.
Yes, he'll go with that one for now.
"Hmm, I won't ask about your work again. I surely wouldn't want to talk about it, so I wouldn't expect you to," he paused, trying to keep from smiling any more than he already had because of his comment. So he thought the love of books was charming? "And when it comes to my bookish nature, you're one of the very few I've encountered who find it charming. Others just find me too awkward and it certainly doesn't help that I have a talent for embarrassing myself when speaking to people. It's... not my forte."
The magician could already hear the train in the near distance and somehow, it made him anxious. Perhaps it was just the idea that he would have to part from someone so interesting (and stupidly attractive) so soon after. But they could use this time to get to know each other, right? "Um, since I have so stupidly rambled about my love of books and I've obviously made it known I like to wander around, what is it that you like to do in your spare time?"

He was glad. Bran wasn't going to ask him about work again, and possibly Henri would like to keep it that way for the rest of eternity. If he had to talk to Bran about... that... he probably would have been equally a blushing mess as Bran had been before. So embarrassing. Yet Henri still shot him a warm and reassuring smile, as though thanking him for understanding. Henri was a bit curious about Bran's work, but since neither of them particularly wanted to talk about work, he now considered it a somewhat taboo topic.
Suited him just fine.
"Huh? I don't really see a problem with your speaking. I mean, you're speaking fine with me, right? Or maybe I'm just that easy to talk to. But I like talking to you, so don't feel embarrassed about it! It'd be a shame to silence yourself out of the fear of that." Okay, perhaps he was laying it on a bit thick. Only a bit thick, though. He was sincere about it, though. Talking was his one joy, one of his main means of spreading kindness and happiness through people. He couldn't imagine himself not speaking. Sure, he'd embarrassed himself once or twice, too, but that hardly counted in the grand scheme of things.
The train arrived and before Henri answered Bran's question, he beckoned him to follow him onto the train. It was fairly empty, being late as it was, so the two of them were able to find seats quickly. "It's really, I actually liked it when you talk about it. I don't know, you just sound so happy. But I guess it is my turn, isn't it. Huh, what do I do in my spare time?"
Good question. Henri hardly had any. Juggling work, and then the whole Resistance stuff. They hadn't really done much at all, barely had a cohesive group going. It seemed to be a more rag-tag group than anything, but he was trying to fix that. Trying to find a headquarters, or at least a meeting place. Somewhere discrete.
"I like traveling places. I mean, the Outer Ring is so interesting, isn't it? If you know where to look. Chinatown's one of my favorite places, but even so there are other equally nice places too. You just need to know where to look. I've always wanted to go to the Inner Heart, but I know better than to step foot there where people can see me. I'd stand out like a sore thumb." He wanted to see the tabled Louvre, the Effiel Tower (up close), the Notre Dame Cathedral. The places that his parents had spoke of, even if they themselves didn't see it either.
"It's my turn now, isn't it? Well, I guess I'm particularly bad at coming up with things, so I'll go simple. What's your favorite kind of food?"
