not a word of reply can leave his lips when she snatches him up and pulls him into a swirl of dance. he treads carefully, mindful of her wildly moving feet. so easy to just fall into the motions. so easy yet painfully so.
"you haven't changed." he breathes. "in all these years, still so naive and freespirited."

the earth still holds residue of what it used to be, even as lakes recede and mountains pile up. neither can leopold remove himself from his past. deny the pleasures they used to share.
she dances circles around him, literally; flitting, undressing. the fire in the hearth seems to blaze brighter. he grows breathless. sigrun pauses, looks him in the eye. "how many?" she asks.
"how many years has it been?" this, she learns, is the way to be wise - quantify.

she knows. he’s said it once before, twice even. thirty years it’s been (maybe more, maybe less). how young was he when his dreams were smashed and the wonder he held for her slipped away?
“boy, that thing is a demon! you cannot love such a thing, and it will not love you.” so distant a memory, yet so hard to forget. “what use is a demon who only dances?” how many times did his master voice his disapproval, his hate. didn’t he too lash out at her, say: “you’re so naïve mele. what use are you if all you do is dance?”
“too long,” he breathes. his eyes glaze, tears that won’t shed. “i’ve missed you mele.”

she smiles, knowing how important the name is to him.
"i'm back, isn't that all you wanted?" she reaches up again to wind her fingers in his hair. "why are you unhappy?" her hands drift to brush the dark circles under his eyes, as if she could coax out tears.
he calls her by her old name, he praises her, the ingenue. yet he seems expectant, and sigrun can't understand of what.

thumb running lightly along the contours of her cheekbone, feeling the delicate structure beneath the silk soft skin.
“a lot has changed.” a deep breath, exhale. the moment is broken just like that. “sigrun. you can’t disappear for years an expect things to remain the same. that’s just naïve.”
he tears himself from her hold. dancing, how foolish. what a waste of time.

she watches his bliss wane, rests her hand on top of his, trying to hold on. when he moves away, she adjusts her grip so she still holds his hand, her nails digging in.
"what do you want, then, pierce?" she says. "do you want me to be savage, like the others?" her eyes flash with the potential. he may think her weak and capricious, but she chooses benevolence and bliss. sigrun is not a girl. she is still more powerful than any man could hope to be, she is still capable of a demon's brutality, if he wishes to see it.

her grip unshakable, nails like claws digging in. he’s prevented from turning his back on her. heart spasming in his chest, stomach dropping to his feet. when was the last time he truly felt fear?
“i wanted you here, here when i needed you most.” naïve as she is, she is a fearsome creature. a sweet smile hides the potential for malevolence. it scarcely conceals the power behind those glassy eyes. it’s displayed in the flickering fire when she dances, in the grip that holds him. no girl her size could have such a grip. “time is different for human’s mele. one day i’ll be dead, and where will you be?”

he is afraid. she observes this with a hint of remorse. at least he's stopped pulling away. he's been doing it for weeks, avoiding her, all apathy and silence. sigrun's grip loosens, but she still keeps a hold on him. leopold must have been afraid, too, of letting her slip away in all those years. (but perhaps he should have held tighter).
she is frustrated. "i don't know." she hasn't thought about him, dying. she's tried not to. it has already happened, and to her there is no point in dwelling on it. there's nothing she can say for the wounds that have long since scabbed over, nor for those not yet inflicted.
"what about now? what can i do now?"

“you’ve always been able only to think of the here and now.” a chuckle. how long has it been since he’s laughed? “i’ve always loved that about you. it was so easy to lose myself to you.”
just how long can he brood over things he can’t change? it’s time to move on. easier said than done. trying is a start. sigrun, his beloved mele, can appreciate the effort or not. it’s her choice.
“stay by my side, mele, and keep me alive. can you do that much?”

sigrun's brow furrows a little, she notices the way he speaks of her as if she's still in the past. but he doesn't seem angry any more. "nostalgia." she murmurs, to remind herself of the feeling.
"and will you show me these horrors that changed you?" she steps towards him. not touching him, but close enough to feel his warmth.

outside of time she lives, an unchanging existence. how easily she dismisses his melancholy, blames it a longing for times gone by. it’s nothing close. such nativity she displays. will she ever become wise to the way of the world she is so fond of.

he thinks he knows better. sigrun has seen things he never will, has seen the world on every plane, has seen things she could never hope to put into words. memory is cumulative, but it is as if leopold can't remember anything but the suffering he dwells on.
"and the miracles? the beauty?" she cants her head. surely there is more than scorn left in his memories.

the cruelty of this ruined world has robbed him of the ability to appreciate beauty. what little he glimpses in restored museums and in the world outside is meaningless, pictures and trees.
“perhaps you can show me what a miracle is, because i’ve seen none in this life. and beauty is fleeting and artificial. what beauty is left?” she speaks of such foreign things, longs to invoke memories of the past in which things had seemed so wonderful. “maybe that’s why you’ve come back now of all times, to save me from being consumed by the horrors of the world.”
or maybe he’s drawing on straws.

she clicks her tongue, laughs softly. "i can't. you're blind." she says, teasing in her tone as she leans in to kiss him. humanity is a miracle. leopold is a miracle - that he finds ways to survive, even when he seems to lack reasons to.
she is fascinated by his mindframe as much as she is exasperated by it.
horrors are beautiful in their own way, she thinks. she runs her hands down his chest, imagines the scars that rake like mottled mountain ranges.

never will she understand. something not human cannot hope to understand the human struggle. her time isn’t finite, it’s ceaseless. he grows older and she is unchanged, and that’s how it’ll remain.
“you finally see reason.” a little chuckle. “and you are blind to the truth of the world. your entranced by glow of light and the shimmer of water.”
