Anya Dragunov, born Svetlanya Romanov, is the daugher of a wealthy magician family. The Romanov's participation in magic spans hundreds of years in what was formerly Tsarist Russia, but after The Rift, their dynasty fell in the post-apocalyptic fallout. Her great grandfather and grandfather moved what was left of their family to Paris to protect them, and became a part of what was seen as the "elitist" magician society there. Her mother, a commoner named Maria Dragunov, married into the privilege of the Romanov family to guarantee her family's safety in return, but insisted that Svetlanya should never learn magic like her father. [break][break]
The Romanov family tradition wasn't the only sacred tradition that was passed down to her. After spending many summers with her grandfather and the rest of her mother's family, she learned of the Dragunov family tradition of becoming boxers and purveyors of the mixed martial arts. But as she grew, she realized her mother's family had another secret that they'd been keeping for years, even before she was born. After her grandfather passed, she was given a small wooden box with the Dragunov family crest upon it. He'd given specific instruction to give it to her once he'd passed, and for no one to open it. When she did, she found a note with "My Dearest Anya" (a name only her grandfather called her), and a letter revealing the Dragunov family's involvement with her father's enemy. They were members of The Resistance.
[break][break]
Disillusioned and confused, she hid the box and never spoke of it again, continuing her combat training with her uncle and vowing never to reveal what she'd found out ever again, not even to her mother who was no doubt already aware. Why marry into the Romanov family if they were a part of the very anti-magician cell that sought to bring them down? Filled with more questions and answers, she decided to distance herself from her father's family and take on the nickname her grandfather gave her - Anya - and use her mother's maiden name as well for when she participated in fights and competitions. Somehow, fighting helped her forget the lies and secrets both sides of her family seemed to have, and now she finds herself seeking out The Resistance to find some answers.

Anya has developed the resilience ability to see multiple magical planes and, with the help of her uncle, is able to hone her ability to control when and what she sees, turning her ability on and off, so to speak. She has the ability to see the first three planes with not much difficulty. The 4th is barely recognizable, a faded blur, and she's hardly ever able to make it work for her.
