heart pounding and still covered in blood ciaran waits, adrenaline overtaking fatigue. this doesn't happen often, disasters like these, but the fear of them always keeps him alert, keeps him alive-- alive to tell the story.
the brigadier general will see you now.
he practically bursts into the room, chest still heaving with exertion as he waves away a concerned medic. "brigadier general ambrose--" remembering his manners, ciaran snaps into as best of a salute as he is able. "sergeant ciaran callaghan, reporting, sir. the nest we found yesterday--" he breaks into a fit of coughing, spitting blood out of his mouth.
"it was bad." the last words come out in a wheeze. ciaran thinks of the screams, the sheer number of creatures pouring from the mouth of the ruins. "requesting reinforcements, sir."

rare did he take to the field. in youth, he stood shoulder to shoulder with his fellow but age caught up to him. many an injury from battle left him in worser and worser shape. behind a desk he now sat as his men fought for their lives. it never sat well with him.
the current operation weighed heavily on mind. should he send more troops, just in case?
bursting in is sergeant ciaran callaghan, one of his best. blood stains his clothes and lips, worse for wear. he stands quickly to support the man, by passing the desk with a nimble jump that leave joints aching.
"send reinforcements immediately!" he barks to the nearest ears, then turns back to ciaran. "let the medic have a look at you."

he quivers even as the brigadier general supports him, breath coming in short pants. but he doesn't have time to stop, doesn't have time to rest! his men are still out there-- "i need to go back," he rasps, feeling his strength drain. "have to--" a cough is all it takes for the iron tang of blood to reach his tongue.
damn it, damn it, damn it! ciaran curses the failings of the human body, trying to hold himself so that he isn't burdening the older man more than necessary. he thought that the years would make these blows easier, softer. just yesterday he had joked that he was the last member of his original squadron that wasn't dead, crippled, or crazy. a weak attempt to banish his fear, to convince the black seed in his heart that he was alive for a reason.
"so many." he feels a little numb, a little light-headed, mumbling into the shoulder of his superior.

“sergeant callaghan,” his voice rings sharp and authorities to the despairing soldier. “you are in no shape for battle.”
fresh blood rises to his lips. internal injuries are a likelihood leopold dreads. surely if the sergeant reenters battle it will be his last. the medic must see him, immediately if possible. so dogged is ciaran that leopold asserts his authority to calm him, to coerce him towards the care he needs. a soldier of his caliber is a terribly loss.
his body is near limp in his supportive hold, a deadweight. he uses strength he hasn’t used in years to guide him. age make known their aches in joints and muscles that throb protest at every movement. slowly he takes every step. “at ease soldier, you're safe now. reinforcements are on the way.”

like any good soldier, ciaran responds to the note of authority in leopold's voice, allowing himself to be led-- practically carried-- away like a petulant child.
the words of his superior are a small, bitter comfort. ciaran attempts a weak smile, if only to prove that the man isn't wasting his efforts-- but it's hard, because in the corner of his eye he sees the face of young jack (jean, he'd insisted that morning, just like he had always done, only sixteen but big enough to lie his way past everyone but ciaran's experienced gaze), pale, glossy-eyed and blood-smeared.
"there was a boy." he rasps, discontent with the quiet as leopold practically lugs him to the care of a medic. "jack-- jean molyneux. he told me he had a girl living in the outer ring, that he had something--" ciaran breaks off hacking, feeling his bones rattle with every cough. "something he needed to give her..." with some effort, he reaches a shaking hand into his pocket, pulling out the kid's dog tags and a little locket.
"please, if you could..." he winces, voice small. "in case i can't."

blood wet his fingers, seeped through his clothes. the sight, the smell, of it twists his stomach into painful knots. how many would die before these monsters were finally wiped out?
metal clanks. he looks at the necklaces, a locket and dog tags. the name inscribe in blocky letters
“you’re going to give it to that girl yourself. you hear me soldier? you are going to make it.” shouts rose up from somewhere close by. the medical stuff alerted to ciaran’s plight. “hear that? you’ll be in good hands soon. you’re going to live, and the reinforcements will be with your men any second.”
