He was fairly large, and that was probably why people stayed away from him when he came here. Not that he particularly wanted them to stay away - for his own reasons. It wasn't often he came to one of these places, though. It was where the downtrodden and particularly poor came, and he shouldn't be wasting time here. He needed money, and he doubted that many people here found themselves with a good wad of cash.
He wasn't particularly here for that, anyways.
Henri spots a kid in the corner. He looks like a kid - but looks don't hold much weight these days. At least, he looks younger than him. He looks kind of broken, kind of bruised, and beside himself he sifts uncomfortably, torn between his want to approach him and help him, or stay here scouting the place out.
He decides the latter - he can't help his nature, sometimes. To be kind above all else is kind of what he's known for, anyways. He approaches the kid, somewhat at a loss for words, he's not very good at this. The approaching people out of the blue part, not so much the kindness. "I, uh, are you okay? You look hurt."

he can feel a presence at his shoulder, and judah rolls his eyes, turns to tell this one to leave too, before he catches sight of him. the man is smiling softly, his brow creased in concern. judah realizes he wants something else. he's not entirely sure what.
it's unexpected, and judah doesn't return his smile. he stares blankly for a moment before he picks up his drink (takes a sip), and fumbles for a pen.
fine. he writes on a corner of the napkin, pushing it towards the man.

Henri isn't really fooled. The kid looked really beat up, and beside himself, he doesn't take the hint to leave him alone. In usual circumstances he would probably have left him to do whatever it is he was doing, but Henri couldn't help himself. He could see the bruise - no doubt there were probably more.
"You sure? You don't have to tell me anything, just let me help you." For some reason, he refuses to not help. Maybe he really was an overbearing mother like figure (always got teased for that in school). "You look pretty bad."

judah is used to people feeling sorry for him. what he isn't used to, is people persistent to help. he's far beyond help. it isn't pessimism, it's a fact. there isn't anyone in paris with enough power to free him from the king's hold, at least not anyone who cares.
he wonders, if he just sits and stares, will the man give up and leave. judah takes a sip of his drink, turns back to find him still there. the bruising along his neck has started to ache now that he's aware of it.
sighing, he points to the seat next to him. maybe if he explains it, maybe the man will be deterred. hopefully he'll be outraged. he toys with the pen in his hand a moment before deciding what to write. he writes quickly, the writing heavy and spidery.

Henri hasn't got a clue what the underground has to do with the boy being here and injured. He takes the seat, curious but he still doesn't ask the questions - he lets the kid do it.
"The catacombs? Uh, skeletons, corpses, and hidden treasure, maybe? Why?" Henri can't imagine going down into the darkness. Perhaps that was his own fear - besides, what's in there besides an imminent death?
Don't tell him... This kid went down there! No wonder he looked so beaten up - was he trying to find treasure or something stupid?

Henri doesn't find his life very charmed. Then again, he recognized that some people have got it a lot worse than him, and he shouldn't take what he has for granted. Still, he grants his kindness to practically anyone nowadays - strangers or not.

Henri was oblivious of the scowl, or the anger. He jut assumed the kid was constantly this way, and there was nothing to prove him wrong. He glanced over at the napkin once more - the boy has written something else.
It makes him tremble in fear, involuntarily, for a second. They can't be real, right? Monsters weren't real, after all, and vampires were made from legend. He's caught between disbelief and a strange sort of fear. Was it vampires that did this to the boy? It takes him a second before he realizes he's being quite stupid. His fear of the dark wasn't so prevalent, and there's no reason he should believe him.
Still, something gives him the benefit of the doubt. "You... you don't suppose they're really down there, do you?" He can't hide the fact that he's a little spooked, despite the fact that he's reassured himself twice, three times, that the kid's probably pulling some practical joke and taking advantage of the kindness he offered. "Did they do that to you?"

judah can read the flickering emotions in the other man's eyes, watching with amusement, like it's a feature film. disbelief, fear, unease. he glances over at his drink - notices it's emptied, can't remember how or when it happened, and waves for another.
it's getting hard to keep up with what's being said, but he forces himself to sit up straighter. judah nods. instead of writing anmore, he draws. seven thick slashes, overlapping some of what's been written - a crown.

It's a bit unbecoming of a grown man to tremble in the face of a made up creature, and yet Henri did. Vampires weren't real, they couldn't possibly be real. Was there some else in the catacombs that perhaps attacked the kid? Something else, maybe another person, or maybe there really were monsters down in the creepy catacombs, amongst the dead. Perhaps, even walking skeletons and the living dead?
He shook his head, glanced at the new drawing. A crown - Henri isn't quite sure what it means. "Royalty? You mean, there's a whole kingdom of them?" Henri really doesn't want to believe the kid, keep pretending that monsters weren't real, the like. It's hard to believe that something like that was right beneath their nose. "Are you alright? I mean, you escaped with some injuries, but I think they can be easily tended to." Perhaps the kid was traumatized, or something like that.

chin braced in his palm, a drowsiness in his movements, he nods. if myron were here, he would insist judah was in good condition. he would insist judah be thankful for how gently he was treated, not like the rest of the livestock.
the bite marks don't ever really get the chance to heal - he's sure it would be all mottled, scar tissue, behind the bruising.
he scribbles something into the napkin, but the only space left is damp. the ink smears, spreads illegible. judah scowls, balling up the napkin and tossing it aside.
reaching over the table, he grabs for henri's arm, for lack of anything else to write on.
on the inside of his wrist, he writes 'escape', and then he crosses it out.

Henri watched as the kid scribbled, only to have it blurred. He was a bit apprehensive about the idea of an entire kingdom of vampires lurking within the catacombs, in the darkness, with their undead armies and their blood sucking monsters. Who knew what else was in there? He was afraid, but he was trying (key word: trying) to appear at least somewhat not-terrified at this new found revelation. It may have been fake, the thought swam in his head, but it was also information, even if a little scary.
He didn't expect the kid to grab his arm, even though there was nothing left to write on. He easily turns his arm, to whatever the kid wants, and he managed to glimpse at what he's writing, even upside down. "Escape...?" It wasn't long after he crossed it out, and although Henri was sometimes oblivious, the meaning didn't completey fly over his head this time.
"You haven't escaped? You can't escape?" Henri was a bit appalled, and he once-overed the kid again to take a look at his conditions. They weren't good. "What did they do to you in there - wait, please, let me take you somewhere safe, at least for a little bit to tend your wounds so that they heal properly. You'll die if they keep treating you like that!"
He didn't want to force the kid, though. Even if he did look awful, even if he did want to just pick him up and bring him to the nearest hospital. He wanted to protect him, but he wasn't sure if he could fight off a vampire just by himself. He wondered if the resistance would take him in, for a brief second the thought flickered, but he shook it away - this was no time to mix his sentiments with work.

there's something cathartic, telling a stranger everything, like bringing light into the darkness he's bound to. he doesn't know if henri believes him. he's undoubtedly interested, concerned - he might think judah is traumatized and raving. it doesn't matter.
his eyes are sharp and earnest, meeting henri's.
