You've never known parents. You don't even know your name for awhile, and maybe that thought should depress you. But the orphanage is all you've ever had, so you don't long for the hazy figures that had to give you up. If you'd thought about it more, maybe, but in your many nameless years your nose is buried in a book and you love information. You're not particularly a fan of learning itself, but the sensation of knowing is astounding and you're allowed to continue your studies even after you turn eight. Your mentor praises your work, your peers admire your progress, and it feels like there's nothing you can't do. Your pride swells as your character shines with the happiness of excelling. It's just a shame neither you nor your senior notice the shift from confidence to arrogance.[break][break]
You pick your name from an almanac like any other child, but your mind is on Arthurian legends and great wizards and sorcerers. Merlin and Morgan le Fay, you don't explicitly tell anyone they're your namesake but your thirteen year old self is ecstatic when someone first says it aloud, unaware of the hidden meaning. The high of having a name of your own (an identity) is a dangerous one that you ride on. Your mentor tells you you're not ready to summon a djinn, but you've never tasted defeat and it feels like you never will. The fear of failure doesn't hold you back as you sneak into her library and browse her books for the material you haven't covered yet. Your lines are perfect, all the runes and sigils and herbs are present, and all that's left is to call out the spirit's true name.[break][break]
And it works. The first sound you here is pitched shrieking and yelling, and you wonder if this is a sign you did something wrong and you're going to die but... it doesn't kill you. It doesn't escape. And for a second you're overjoyed with what has to be overwhelming success. Except... the spirit doesn't do anything else either. Your mentor never told you how to make a contract, a good one, and your inexperience shows itself plain as day. When morning comes you're scolded harshly - you could have died, why were you so stupid, I told you you weren't ready! - but it all ends with the reluctant admittance that if you could pull off the summoning at such a young age, it has to mean something.[break][break]
If only that something would show itself already. It's been four whole years.

Marlin's contract is unnaturally loose, based on his ignorance when forming it. He keeps his djinn bound to him, and prevents him from killing his master, but he can't make him do much of anything else.[break][break]
When his djinn does decide to listen to him, Marlin seems like he can persuade other people to do what he says, much like a siren, and he can also possibly break things with sound and hear long distances (but he has to rely on Nasnan to tell him what he hears, and... he doesn't always tell the truth). All of these abilities channeled through Marlin are pretty weak though.[break][break]
He has a contract with the djinnnasty nasnan
