Books were friends when he was younger. It allowed him to travel out of the world he was living in for at least a little while. It allowed him to forget all the things he had to put up with.[break][break]
Books were his freedom while magic were his chains.[break][break]
Bran surely was like any other child who was forced into the world of magic. His story was not anything extraordinary. Or at least, that's what he firmly believed. His life was nothing like the stories he had heard as a child nor was it like the books he had read. He was not a mighty knight who had saved a kingdom from a fearsome dragon or a hero of prophecy that was chosen to do grand and wonderful things. No. No, he was an orphan who was forced into this "magical" world to learn just like the rest of the children he was around.[break][break]
It all bored him horrendously. Magic was nothing exciting when it was something forced upon you. It was a prison. Everything about it was an unbreakable cage. Sure, sometimes magic could make things interesting, but what about the freedom he desired?[break][break]
This is why he stayed with his books. No other luxuries captivated him so like books had with their glorious stories. He wished to live in those fairytale places and leave this otherwise boring one behind. There is a better world out there, he thinks. There must be.

For someone who becomes easily bored by things, it's a bit surprising to even himself that he pretty much sticks to the books when it comes to magic. Perhaps it's the idea that magic comes with a price that lingers in the back of his mind that keeps him from being overly flashy with it. Despite this line of thinking, he does have a few contracts with djinn. His primary contract lies with a djinni known as Resi, a spirit whose magic heavily relies on shapeshifting. As such, Bran has the ability to very briefly shapeshift into a raven. However, this magic is hardly ever used as it often leaves him drained for at least two days after and he is only able to do so if Resi feels like letting him (which usually leads to Bran finding ways to bribe Resi). Regardless, he thoroughly enjoys the small time he can do such a thing because of the sense of freedom it gives him.
