what an unpleasant wench mrs. mayella was! caliot wrinkled his nose, thinking about how he was attacked by little puffs of powder every time she flounced her curls and the way her voice sometimes squeaked when she said his name in that high-pitched drawl of hers: cali- OT! she continued to invite him to sit with her and tuls, who was the most pitiful-looking boy caliot had ever laid eyes upon. he remembered the way tuls looked at him, how his doe-eyed expression made him feel as thought he had wings, and it only made him feel more guilty every time he left without him. caliot trailed a finger over the bumps and contours of the stone-and-skull corridor as he shuffled back home, all knots and cricks. it wasn’t like he could decline to sit for afternoon tea--which was, in and of itself, the stupidest term he’d ever heard--because, well, that was rude. terms like courtesy and gallantry were loosely toyed with down in the courts of the catacombs, stretched and plucked like so much woven fibre, but common practice all the same. rowan liu

rowan had lost his cat. his precious, precious cat.
granted, said cat was a lion, but still a cat. toby, his lion. he had wandered off somewhere, and rowan was clueless to find where. he'd been lucky neither luna nor lily had thought to go through the open door either. he wondered if his apprentice knew what he had done, setting lose a lion in the city of paris. he probably didn't, but still rowan was tasked with the duty of finding his lion.
and it wasn't even his fault too, he grumbled. that kid, he was only a kid, didn't know how to even close the cage properly. and he'd told him how, many times! but he figured, how hard could it be to find a lion roaming about? toby was quite tame, for all intents and purposes, but he didn't want him accidentally put down for being a danger or anything. but he came up with nothing. absolutely nothing. no one had seen him, save for a vague 'i think he went that way' and a point down to the sewer area.
rowan shuddered at the thought, but he went anyways. down into the sewers, the catacombs. where, oh where, could his cat be.

the lion was, in fact, in the catacombs. it had wandered off, and in the dark tunnels it went. it was a curious sort, although after a while it had just started to go about in aimless directions.

caliot watched the figure resolve itself out of the darkness piece by piece, hardly believing his eyes: a sinewy limb here, the feline arch of a spine there, the careless sweep of a tail. he stopped in his tracks, drawing in whistle-thin breaths. his sudden halt, however, had more to do with surprise than fear. he’d not much experience with animals; spending most of his life in the catacombs had acquainted him with rats, but they were small things that you could crush under your foot. “that,” he said aloud, to nobody in particular, “is not a rat.” rowan liu

rowan was probably getting lost. not that he was necessarily bad at directions, but these catacomb... things were definitely easy to navigate either. it was like a maze he couldn't solve or remember how to solve. not that he ever held the answers, anyways. it was dark, and he wasn't sure if he should call out toby's name or continue in stony silence.

the lion approached the weird man. he was weird, because he smelled weird. it wasn't rowan, that was for sure. he was a friendly lion, for the most part, a lot more friendly than the other two. still, he growled a little at the stranger, but did nothing to stop his approach, more curious than anything.

the lion rumbled, and caliot took a step backward. he’d growled, but caliot felt the light prickle of curiosity catch and tug at him, the smattering of dot urges that meant the lion wanted to know more spreading across his skin. it sure wasn’t his curiosity. he took a cautious step forward, then. “here, kitty,” he cooed, crouched at eye level with the large cat. it didn’t take much bending; jesus, he was big. he patted his knees, wondering if it was a good idea to maintain eye contact. rowan liu i know it’s bad that i’m still trying to find the voice of my own character but it is what it is ;; buries face in hands

Rowan was getting increasingly worried. If he couldn't find his lion before the next show within these catacombs (and they were creepy - dear lord why in the world would anyone want to see skulls and bones), Toby might be lost for good. And then Lily and Luna would be so sad, and he would be sad... No, he mustn't think like that, he had to keep confidence in himself, he had to keep positive.

The lion wanted to know more about this weird thing. He decided - he liked this man - he kind of even reminded him of Rowan. Although Rowan always told him not to approach strangers (more for their safety than his), he couldn't help but be delighted as the man cooed. Maybe this one would pet him! He wanted Rowan to pet him, but this strange man would do for now. Plus he was staring at him like Rowan did! He stepped ever the closer to him, yearning for petting.
caliot next post Rowan will find them. Please let him find them mid pet and get soooo jealous. |

caliot was not a strigoi who could easily deny the will of those who wish with a deep, unseated, off-the-hinge yearning; he petted the damn thing. “what manner of beast are you?” he crooned, ruffling behind the ears. the mane was very thick and he had to work to comb his fingers through it. the action satisfied some primal urge in both parties, and caliot felt the pricks of curiosity begin to fade away from his skin, replaced by something warm that spread over his body like poured honey. rowan liu

Rowan turned a corner and it was precisely at that moment where a burst of joy replaced his worriedness. That shape - that was definitely a lion! And that lion - it was definitely Toby! He couldn't help himself, as he was happy that Toby was, first and foremost, alive and well. As he quickened his pace upon the floor, in these creepy catacombs of skeleton walls, he saw something with Toby.
"Wait - don't -" But too late was he that he'd already petted Toby. And relief as Toby did not bite this stranger's hand, but instead accepted the pet as though it was him, Rowan, lion 'tamer' (more like lion friend who loved his big cats more than any other thing in the world).
Was it a little jealousy that consumed him for a brief moment before he realized that it was silly, that Toby was probably just being the friendly cat that he was. For the lion did turn to look at him, and he imagined he had a smile on his face (maybe, lion details were sketchy from so far away). He let the happiness of finding the lion, and the relief of not finding some massacre of bodies, flood over him as he came up to Toby and pet him.
Definitely Toby, with the cooing way that he responded. "Toby, you really shouldn't run off like that."

it was a short, sharp rap against his skull that made him look up; nothing physical, of course, but everything was soaked to dripping in fucking emotion that it was all the same in the end. his brethren were blessed with exquisite gifts in the dawn of days, also known as the apocalypse, but he’d been given the ability to be artfully tugged ass-first through one-man ballets at the whim of a rat’s tantrum. it was tiring, being a ragdoll. it wasn’t the man’s fault when caliot found himself resenting him. the honey spread had been left to sit and it left caliot soggy with emotional leavings. the sooner this was done, the better. he couldn’t help but continue petting the god-damned feline, though. life was strange. he looked up at the man, and realized what he was; a strigoi was physically incapable of turning an ear to a human’s red-hot thrum. caliot couldn’t decide if it was good or bad that his thirst had very recently been sated. he didn’t think the human knew where he was. “this is yours?” he asked, voice worn smooth to hear from practice. another strigoi with lesser restraint would have asked a different sort of question--or not at all--but caliot couldn’t help that he didn’t know what to call the thing he was petting along with the human. rowan liu

Rowan didn't mean for the emotions he felt. He didn't really care - Toby was here, and his worst fears were dispelled. Toby hadn't fallen ill, or had been shot, or left to die, or anything. He was here, perfectly healthy (although snuggling up to a stranger).
But he mostly found it odd that the stranger was the one petting him. Didn't people usually shrink away from large predators? Especially with teeth like Toby's. A strange sort of curiosity overcame him as he examined the two of them. Toby was, as per usual, happy with being pet (honestly Rowan thought that he would be happy with any sort of owner even if it wasn't him), though the man was a different story.
"I'm sorry, is he being a bother again? Honestly, he'd always been a slut for cuddling loved it when people pet him. I think he likes you." Rowan smiled at the guy, although this was surely odd. He didn't question it much though, why he was down here in that catacombs with his lion. He wasn't even sure why his lion even decided to wander this place, anyways. Perhaps the cage had been a bit too cooped up - understandable. He knelt down to hug his cat.
"Why'd you have to go off and make trouble, Toby? You had me so worried. Lily and Luna are probably worried sick, too."

caliot blinked. he was distracted both by the young man’s troubling status as a human and the absurdity of the situation he found himself in, though all the while he eased fingers through the large creature’s mane. the human couldn’t know the danger he was in, smiling like a bundle of sunflowers. he would have said something, but the young man leaned in to hug his creature (whose name was toby) and caliot simultaneously found himself leaning out of the way, hands running away to his sides. a muscle worked in his jaw, which he fought to keep closed. he’d recently been sated, but the temptation lingers, he found. fingers had a tendency to creep if you weren’t careful; the tongue ran over tips and teeth unwarranted. it was bad enough that livestock were already scared when it was time to feed. but the young man spoke and caliot was blinking again. “you have more of these beasts?” rowan liu

Caliot blinked and Rowan blinked in response. "Yes, I do." Of course he had more, and for a moment he had thought it was obvious. Then again, perhaps it wasn't overtly obvious that he was a lion tamer who owned a lion - more than one lion. And a tiger too. Perhaps the guy didn't know there was a circus in town. Perhaps he had been living under a rock.
Well, they were in the dark catacombs, after all. Did the guy live here?
"He's got a sister too. And there's also a tiger. Lily and Luna. We came with the circus." He was trying to explain it all, but it sounded a bit absurd. "I'm a lion tamer, you see, but the three of them are all quite tame to begin with. They were raised with me, but I've never really seen anyone else approach Toby without me by his side... You're quite brave."
He prattled on about it - he was always happy talking about his cats. They were his life, after all.

caliot was silent through the arrow-volley of praise. he wasn’t really listening to the human; he was listening to the flow of blood, imagining it course through the tips of his fingers in great pulses, doubling back through veins that bulged through the skin of his arms, reaching up like some gnarled claw to his neck. it was the loudest whisper in his ears, and he almost couldn’t take it. he tucked in and rolled backwards, launching himself into the air and landing in a crouch some ways away from the human and his beast. acrobatics was, quite simply, poppycock; befitting more an animal than nobility such as those who dwell down in the courtly catacombs. it was something, then, that caliot enjoyed immensely in the privacy of his own home, with nobody to watch. “you shouldn’t be here.” but even as he said this, he eyed the creature--was it called a lion?--with something like longing. rowan liu

Rowan was blissfully unaware of what Caliot was going through right now. Sure, if he had known that Caliot was a strigoi, he'd have maybe been a bit more on guard, but it wasn't like he had never offered himself up once or twice before. The circus was strife with strigoi, and when they were traveling it's not as though they brought bags of blood with them, quite inefficient when surrounded with other humans. And it's not like they ever really killed, either.
And then he just kind of... he did acrobats that would have put some of the ones at the circus to shame. Still, Rowan stopped talking about his cats (Lily, Luna, Toby were his absolute favorite things to talk about at all times every day of the week), because he was downright startled by the sudden... retreat?
"Are you okay? Is there something wrong?" Technically, no one was suppose to be here in the catacombs, but well, that was just how it worked out. He didn't see a problem with that. "Do you like Toby?"
He was happy to see that someone shared his love for Toby (without fear, he hoped).
