chinatown is always a maze to christian. it's like the winding alleys and endless labyrinth of streets reconfigure themselves every time he comes. he stands with crummy paper in hand, trying to look for the shop where his mother gets her medicine from. he flinches whenever another person comes too close for comfort, hood drawn up over his head to try and keep people away. it works to varying extents.
he briskly tries to move through the crowd, only stopping when he eyes something in a shop window. dubious meat selections hang on the display, and christian finds himself tempted. the best food he's ever eaten comes from day at the mess house. soldiers need to eat to fight, after all. that and the money are probably the only good reasons to join the place, as long as you don't value your sanity.
the shopkeeper gives him a dirty look and he spits back at him. he's made worse decisions, he thinks, as he scrambles to escape from the furious man with a chopper in hand and newfound determination to have him butchered. christian flees into the alleyways. he knows he's hopelessly lost now, but the brick walls are filthy streets invite him for a seat. he takes up the offer, content to rot away with the trash thrown out back.

christian doesn't trust the look on this person's face - never mind that she's feels awfully familiar. places like these has hundreds of people, faces start to look the same. he isn't pulling away from her touch. her hands provide a comfort that draws him in, has him weak on his knees. he can't muster the strength to stand.
his throat feels dry. "can you?" he speaks bitterly. he can't save his men, can't save his family, can't even save himself, and a stranger thinks they can?
